Second Chance Month Congressional Briefing

We participated in a Congressional Briefing during Second Chance Month to discuss the need for second chances. Our message was clear…we need to rethink

  1. Who we believe are eligible for second chance? Everyone and especially those with convictions that make us feel uncomfortable or we have been indoctrinated to believe are by default unworthy of second chances.

  2. What we consider second chances? Decarceration, ending policies like truth-in-sentencing, restoration deflection, diversion, and ending felony disenfranchisement are all second chances.

  3. When we should be providing second chances? Second chances should happen at the earliest point possible, preferably prior to any interaction with the criminal legal system.

  4. Why second chances should be considered a key component to public safety? Second chances give people hope which contributes to a reduction in anti-social behavior.
